Description

The RNase Detection Kit* sensitively detects RNase contamination present in sample solutions, to a level of 10-9 Kunitz units/µl. The procedure involves incubating control RNA with test samples, followed by agarose gel analysis using included control standards. The kit is certified RNase-free and is appropriate for screening reagent solutions for RNase activity prior to use with RNA samples. Shipped on dry ice. Must be kept frozen before use. 
Up to four samples can be tested simultaneously with this kit. RNase activity can be quantified by comparison to the reference standards included. The kit is ideal for early detection of RNase activity in reagent solutions that will be used for sensitive RNA based experiments.

The procedure is to mix 1 µl of the test sample with an RNA standard provided. The sample is incubated at 37°C for 1 hour. After incubation, the sample is loaded onto a native agarose gel along with four control standards included with the kit. Results are interpreted from the gel analysis.

Test Sensitivity

The RNase Detection Kit is capable of detecting as low as 10-9 Kunitz units/µl. For clarity, 1 unit of RNase is commonly defined as the amount of enzyme that produces an increase of 1.0 A260 unit at 37°C when RNA is hydrolyzed to acid soluble oligonucleotides.

One Kunitz unit is equal to 50 RNase units. The increase of 1.0 A260 unit represents the loss of
40 µg/ml (0.04 µg/µl) or 1/50 Kunitz unit.
